Wake Up Wednesday - Super Heroes of Service

Today is our first official Super Heroes of Service Challenge.  I was THRILLED to read a lot of your comments on last week's post saying that you're going to join in.  I think this will be really cool.

So, here's our very first challenge.  Visit someone who is lonely and bring something to share.  You could have your child draw a picture or bring a much loved toy.  The point is to not only visit, but to give your child something to talk about and share with the person you visit.  It could even be a song to sing.

We are going to try to visit a nursing home.  I'll call ahead and see if there's someone who doesn't get a lot of visits that we could drop in on.  I'll have Rex and Baden make something to give or share.

You'll have all of October to complete the challenge.  (Optional: If you want to tell me how it went or send a picture, send it before the end of the month and I'd be happy to include it in the next Super Heroes of Service post next month.)  It'll be fun to share the experiences.  Woo-hoo!  I'm so excited.

Thanks for reading.

  1. Score! My daughter and I did this last night! My neighbor man, who is single and very lonely happened to mow our lawn while we were out of town this past weekend. He didn't tell us he did it, but our other neighbors told us. We took him over some treats and a thank you note. We sat and visited for a while and learned a lot about him. Maybe we'll go visit him again this week, so I can get double brownie points. :)

  2. i lovvvvvvvve thissssssssssssss!!! Im taking a high school girl out today who's going through a hard time.... now I need to think of something to take her :) ur awesome

  3. love this idea! count me in!

  4. I love this! We actually just did this. My husband runs a nursing home and they were planning a really nice dinner for them. We took our 8 year old son and he played the piano for them. The residents loved it! Thanks for these wake-up wednesdays! LOVE THEM!

  5. This is such a neat idea! And something I know my daughter would love to do. For the past few months, our neighbor was going thru a divorce. Every day, when he get home from work, my daughter would run over to his house just to say "Hi!" And she would frequently bring him pictures she had made. I love your Wake Up Wednesday posts!

  6. I just want you to know how much I love this idea! I'm so glad I found your blog both for the creative ideas and how you work to make your kids into great human beings! My son and I will join this one for sure!

  7. Dear Cheri - I am very new to the blogging world and just stumbled upon your blog while looking for some great ideas for boy birthday parties (I will have a 5 year-old in 14 days - he is on the countdown! - and a 20 month-old.). I have just fallen in love with you and your family already. The mustache birthday party idea was a hoot!

What a very neat challenge! Families are so busy these days that so many do not slow down to focus on personal relationships - especially with complete strangers. Thank you for the inspiration and little push to make a difference in someone's life. Andrew, Ryan and I will be working on your challenge this month!

  8. I just wanted to say how I love how you challenge people to do wonderful things.

My kids and I have been inspired by this post http://kwavs.blogspot.com/2011/05/blessing-bags-how-to.html?showComment=1316712708147#c7861336653805193523. ... just an idea for your next challenge. (not like you need one, you are so resourceful! :)

  9. My dad was in a nursing home for a few months before we found out he had cancer and passed away. I think visiting a nursing home is a wonderful idea. It would make me sad that I couldn't visit my dad more and wished that kind strangers would have visited him when I couldn't.

  10. Cynthia - Thanks for the inspiration. We actually just did that one a couple of weeks ago. I goes we're on the same page :)
