Da-na-na-na-na-nah They Say It's Your Birthday!

So today is my birthday.  Yup.  I'm 33 now, which feels pretty weird to say.  While I wish I had fewer wrinkles and a firmer bum, I really can't complain in any way.  Life is so good.  I am so grateful for my boys and husband and everything else that life has brought me.  There have been ups and downs, but it's been quite an amazing ride so far.

So while I won't be posting anything crafty today, I do want to talk for a second.  I am always evaluating this blog and trying to figure out how to improve it and in which direction I want things to go.

Here are a few things I wanted to make note of.

1) Sometimes I have random little things I want to share or say, but they don't qualify for a whole post.  I'm adding a new section at the bottom of post that I'm calling "at the water cooler."  It will include random info that I'd like to tell you about....as if we were hanging out.

Look for it at the bottom of the post.

2) I'm actually using instagram for real now.  If you want to follow me on it I am now "mommaroars" on it.  I share random pictures with captions like this.

While eating a frosty at Wendy's Baden ask very seriously, "Where is the music?  I wanted to dance!"  Love this kid.

3) I'm also HERE on twitter, which I often link to my instagram.  I still don't have a button in the sidebar, but I'm working on that.  I update there about posts here and sometimes throw in a little more.

I would totally love it if any of you want to follow me on Facebook, twitter, instagram, or Pinterest.  I've never pushed any of you to join me in any of those places (like with giveaways) because I only want you there if you want to be there.  That being said, the more the merrier :)

Now I'm off to eat some more birthday cake.  Thanks for reading.

- My sister made THIS CAKE (from the Pioneer Woman) for my birthday and I'm hoarding the leftovers. It's so stinkin' good.

- My boys are digging the Chipmunk movies lately and I can hardly handle it.  Went online to reserve the 3rd one at our library but we were #104 on the waiting list?  What?  That just seems a bit crazy.  Chipmunks, people?  Really?

- Today is the last day to use the Silhouette promo code.  Find the scoop HERE.

Sunshine Sunday - neighbors, trains, dates, and laughs

We have this couple that lives a few minutes down the road from us and they are awesome.  I think they're in their late eighties, but they have this huge yard that they maintain so well.  They invited us over to pick some of their fruit that they weren't using.  It made me so happy to go over with the boys to pick peaches and blackberries.  There's nothing like fresh fruit from friends.  This couple is so cute together and I hope Mr. Roar and I can be like them when we get older.

We took the boys downtown to see the new mall and ride the trax.  Baden was giddy about it, which made it so fun.

Speaking of Baden, he and I got to go on a little date this week.  He picked In and Out.  It was so fun to get one on one time with him, because now that it's summer that it relatively nonexistent.

Soapbox Saturday - Vinyl Impression

When I was decorating our master bedroom, I had one huge blank wall behind the TV and I couldn't decide what to do there.  Frames wouldn't work because I didn't want them to compete with the TV.  I needed something huge, but subtle at the same time.

I started looking at vinyl and I found Vinyl Impression.  When I saw the giant world map in their shop I was completely sold.  What a cool, awesome, unique idea for a big wall!

You could use it to mark places you've traveled or places you want to go.  I loved the idea of being able to show the boys where certain countries are.  And, since it's vinyl it can easily be removed when you want to change the decor.

The map has different size options, if you don't have a huge wall.

Here's mine on our wall.  I love how it's subtle (though that made it really hard to photograph it) and how it works with the rest of the room which you can see HERE.  We haven't put our pins up yet, because I'm still deciding how I want to use them.

Mommy School in Action - part 7

We are still rockin' and rolling with mommy school around here.  It's helped our summer go by a bit more smoothly.  The boys look forward to it and I do too.  It's really a simple thing and sometimes as short as 15 minutes, but it makes a big difference for us.  So here are our top 3 activities from Mommy school this week.

1) Mini Volcanoes.  I found this idea on Preschool Alphabet HERE (via HERE on Pinterest).  It's super simple and fun.  You just spread baking soda on a cookie sheet.  Then put vinegar in cups with a little food coloring.

Then you drop a little of the vinegar over the baking soda and watch it fiz up.

Roar Tee AND a Silhouette Promo

RANDOM QUESTION BEFORE WE START:  Did any of you take advantage of the spend $20 at World Market and get a 15% off a Southwest airlines flight when I posted about it?  Did any of you do it and you don't need the code/coupon?  If you have a code that you aren't using will you drop me an email and I will be forever grateful?  Thanks!  Okay, back to normal stuff.

Back when I picked the name for this blog I chose I Am Momma Hear Me Roar for a lot of reasons.  First off, I wanted to think of motherhood as empowering rather than restricting.  But, I also love the word "roar" because with two boys that's a word I actually hear a LOT.  Mr. Roar always tucks in Rex first and then I try to sneak into his room without him seeing me.  If I'm successful, I jump up and "roar" to see if I can scare him.  Anyhow, there's a lot of roaring at our house.

So I thought I'd use my Silhouette and the Silhouette fabric interfacing to make an appliqu├ęd "ROAR" tee.  Here's how it turned out.

And here's how it looks on my roaring little man.

Alright, now on to the details AND if you're looking to purchase a Silhouette, there's a great promo at the end of the post.

Wake Up Wednesday

Last week's challenge was to refrain from speaking negative words.  I mentioned that I was having a hard time with that concept with Rex.  I thought I'd share something we did, in case any of you have a similar challenge at your house.

So, we had a little lesson during our family night about it and it actually helped.  I took two containers of play dough and some Mr. Potato Head pieces and created two different guys.  (I should have snapped a picture because it was kind of funny.  The play dough was the body and I also had some great cranky eyes from our pumpkin face accessories from Halloween.)  I introduced them as "Happy Harry" and "Cranky Craig."  I made up a story about both of them being invited to a birthday party.  Throughout the party I told the boys what each guy said about the party.

Cranky Craig:  This party is lame.  Why aren't any of these presents for me?  My birthday cake was a lot better than this one.

Happy Harry:  I'm so happy to be here.  Wow, I'm so excited she got such cool presents.  This cake is delicious.

You get the idea.  At the end I asked them which guy they'd like to be friends with.  Since then, we've kind of used "Cranky Craig" and "Happy Harry" as common terms around the house and the boys quickly recognize what I'm talking about.  It's given us a chance to laugh about it rather than feeling frustrated when Rex starts whining.

Alright, on with next week's challenge.

Master Bedroom FINAL REVEAL with Chip It!

After a couple of months of pulling things together, the Master Bedroom is finally finished! I am so excited to share it with you. If you recall, here's what it looked like before.

Here was the view to the right.

And here was the view to the left.

Then, if you recall, I chose this color palette, using Chip It!

And ... here's the new look. As you enter the room this is the view. We reconfigured the room, placing the bed on a different wall.

Sunshine Sunday - trees, summer, and weekends

One of the items on our summer bucket list was for Rex to climb a tree, so we headed to a park with lots of them.

We had to explain what makes a good climbing tree.

The boy doesn't have my fears of heights (which I think I actually acquired when I fell out of a tree and broke my arm :)

Mommy School in Action - part 5

We missed Mommy School posts the last couple of weeks, but I still have lots more to share with you.  Here are a few of our recents favorites.

1) Texture Books.  We found this idea HERE on Not Just Cute, but it's a guest post from Tinkerlab.  We made little books for the boys, which I actually made like Dana's HERE, folding the papers and sewing down the middle.

Then the boys and I went on a walk to capture some textures.  We talked about what texture means and then hunted throughout our neighborhood.  It was fun to take a walk, looking at our neighborhood in a different way than I normally do.  When we found something cool we set a page of our book over it and colored it with the crayon on it's side.

Rex (5) really liked this activity and Baden (3) did too, but he needed a little help holding the crayon sideways to color it.  Here were some of our favorite textures.

Creating Printables - Your Questions Answered

I've received a ton of questions lately about how to create printables now that picnik is closed.  Well, I wrote a post about some other photo editing options HERE, but since I'm still getting lots of questions I thought I'd address them all here on one post.  Here we go!

QUESTION:  Now that picnik is gone, what can I use to create printables?

ANSWER:  As far as ease of use, I would recommend picmonkey.  It's really simple and you can create printable in the exact same way that I showed you HERE using picnik.

QUESTION: Where do you go to get free backgrounds for printables?

ANSWER: I like Design House Digital because they have a handful of really cute files that are free.  Click on freebies to find them.  You need to create an account and load the free stuff into your cart as if you were buying it.  Then proceed to check out and confirm the order.  Then after you've placed your order there's a spot below that says "download."  Just click it and download it to a place on your computer where you can find it again.  Keep in mind that these freebies are NOT meant for commercial use.  They are just for personal use.  (i.e. you can't sell a printable you made using them)

QUESTION: What the heck are you even talking about?  (Okay no one asked that, but some of you are thinking it right now.)

Wake Up Wednesday

Last week's challenge was to rid your life of something.  I had my first garage sale ever.  I pulled out all those decor items that I'd kept, thinking I'd use them sometime.  It felt so good to clear out the basement and the sale went really well.  We cleared most of the stuff out in an hour.  Yahoo!

This week's challenge is to refrain from speaking negative words.  I've been struggling with Rex a little lately.  He's been really down on everything.  "This is boring.  This is the worst day ever!  When are we going to do something fun?  No one is playing with me."  It's probably magnified a bit by the summertime, but it makes me want to make sure that I'm really positive so that I can be a good example for him.  I'm trying to double check myself.

So, did anyone rid themselves of something this past week?  I would love to hear about it.  Thanks for being here.

Photo Collage (for the Master Bedroom)

First off, thank you SO much for your kind comments and support on Sunday's post.  I think I have the sweetest readers in the world.  Thank you.

On to today's post.  The master bedroom is actually finished, but it's not quite time for the reveal.  However, I wanted to share one wall I did a photo collage on that I'm really excited about.  On my husband's side of the bed there was a big empty wall and I couldn't decide what to put on it.  I love art, but I always end up loving photos on the wall more than anything.

So, I pinned this picture below (from HERE) and took some inspiration from it.

In the end, I decided to hang the photos in a really unique way, to create interest.

I took some shots of all of us and I cross processed all the photos at about 30-40% to give them some continuity.

Sunshine Sunday - my two little miracles

This week was kind of emotionally draining.  Yikes!  Sorry to start off Sunshine Sunday with a downer :)  Don't worry.  Every cloud has its silver lining.  If you've been following this blog for a while, you might know we've been trying got get pregnant for about a year and a half.  This week we came to realize that this journey might be a whole lot longer than I had thought.  And while that news made me kind of sad initially, it's also made me realize what huge miracles I've already received.

And no matter what happens, I am just so thankful to have these little guys.  They have made life deeper and bigger and brighter than I ever could have imagined.

I am also grateful that God is stretching me.  It's a little painful, but I don't doubt the end goal one bit.

Thanks for reading.

Soapbox Saturday - Boy Bathroom Prints

I know that some of you have been asking about the boy bathroom prints I mentioned a week ago.  Well, they are now available and here's the story on them.  I created them for our bathroom....

.....but I thought they'd make a great fundraiser for our "For the Love" series.

So, if you'd like to purchase them here's what you can do.  (The fundraiser has ended.  See the instructions at the end to purchase the prints.  Thanks!)

All proceeds from the printables will go to our "For the Love" fundraiser for the next two months.

1) Go to Owen's page HERE and then click on the donate button in the right hand column.  The donation amount required to buy the print files is $6.99.

2) After donating you will be emailed a receipt.  Forward it to me (iammommahearmeroar at gmail dot com) and tell me the color pack you want.  (There are 2 options and I'm not doing custom colors.)

Color Option #1: Cheri's bathroom colors

 Color Option #2: Primary Colors

3) I'll email you the files and you can print them out at your convenience.  (I like Costco for printing because it's only $1.50 for an 8x10.)  These files must be printed as 8x10s.  Please give me a little time to email you the order.  I have a busy day today, but I will try to email them all out by the end of the day.

Any questions?  I'd love your help spreading the word to anyone you might know who'd like the prints.  Please pin it or Facebook it if you like it and let's sell a ton of these babies for a great cause.

Thanks for stopping by.

ADDENDUM: The prints are now in my shop right HERE for purchase.  Thanks!

How to Make Your Own Business Cards

Business cards have been on my to do list for far too long.  It was time to be a big girl and make some cards for this little blog.  I handmade a few, but ran out of them quickly.  So, I finally took the plunge and got some UPrinting business cards.

I made the cards as "blog cards" rather than business cards.  They have all my blog info, so someone can find me online, but they don't have any personal info on them (like phone numbers, etc.).  That way when someone asks about my blog I can just hand this over and not try and find a pen and some scrap paper and tell them that it's m-o-m-m-a and not m-a-m-a.  You know?  Okay, enough blabbing.

I printed these babies at UPrinting (as I mentioned) and had a great experience with it.  The site is really easy to use.

I also really liked the different shape options.  I went with "leaf" because I thought it looked extra cool.

I wanted to design the cards completely on my own, so I used picmonkey to create them.  Here's a short tutorial video on that, in case you aren't familiar with how to go about that.

Learning With LEGOs And A Sweepstakes

As a mother, I am a big fan of toys that teach my children. I also love toys that are durable. And....to be honest, I really prefer toys that don't light up and make tons of noises.

Well, Baden and I recently got to review the new LEGO DUPLO Read and Build set. If your child likes books or LEGOs, this is a really cool concept. I absolutely love this new line. In fact, we used it for our "mommy school" one morning. (We get a little excited when a package comes in the mail. Can you tell?)

Here's what you receive in the pack.

As you go along, reading the story, the pages instruct you on how to put the pieces together.
