Be Brave Sign (for the Surf Shack)

There are a few things I've been making to put on Baden's wall in his Surf Shack room.  Here's a sign I just finished.  Since Baden is kind of my shy guy, I thought "Be Brave" would be a good theme for him and it fits the whole surfing theme as well.

I went to the Depot and purchased a 2'x4' sheet of plywood.  I had them cut it in half for me (so I can make 2 signs).  So the sign is pretty big - 2'x2'.

I started by cutting out vinyl letters.  I also drew in a sun by tracing a plate.

I penciled in a wave shape for the ocean.  I had some leftover paint from his bed and some yellow paint leftover from a project in the family room.

I wanted the plywood itself to be left in some areas of the sign.

I painted the areas, peeled off the vinyl, and gave the whole piece a decent sanding to make it a little distressed.  I'm still debating on whether to leave it or to do a gray wash over the whole thing.  What do you think?

Thanks for dropping in.

  3. Ooh, I think I'd go with a light wood stain over the whole thing. It looks fantastic. I have got to get me a silhouette someday.

  4. Nice job - I think it looks nice now but a gray wash would look good too! So I am no help! ha!

  5. I love the way it is! :) The wood grain looks so cool! (Now I'm curious about what you did/are going to do with the other 2x2 sign!) :) Great job! Bet Baden loves it!

  6. LOVE this! I've been wanting to do something similar (in a different theme) just haven't gotten around to it. I think it depends on the rest of the room for the gray wash.

  7. It's beautiful! I think the raw wood looks good- but a graywash would 'mature' it up so maybe the piece can grow with him?

  10. Love this! I just saw something on the web that a dad said to his son who was scared to go out to the garage fridge to get a drink on his own:

"You can be scared and brave, or you can just be scared"

  11. I think a grey wash would be awesome...kind of give it that weathered wood look it would have after being outside at the beach for a while, you know? And the wood grain would still show thru...Love it!

  13. I think it needs a grey wash. It's beautiful, but it looks too "new" for a beach themed room! Very cute!

  14. it is great. what does Baden think of it ?the gray wash sounds pretty nice since the grain would still show through and even add to the "movement" of the sign.

  16. Definately add a gray wash. I saw it, and thought, I would add a wash over it. I was thinking blue, but gray would be awesome.
