Guide: Teach Your Kids to Look After Their Motorcycle

It’s a great idea to get kids used to look after their belongings from a young age. Getting into the habit early on makes it easier for them to continue as they grow into teens than adults. Giving your child age-appropriate tasks is a good way to start this – toddlers can help you with simple tasks and older kids can do more complicated tasks by themselves. If your child is involved in taking care of their motorcycle, they are more likely to take good care of it and be less reckless – great for parents and children alike.

When your child first gets their motorcycle, get them involved in setting it up. Ask them to help pass you tools and parts whilst it is being assembled. Your child can also help decorating the motorcycle – some come with stickers which need to be placed. Children can also help accessorizing the bike, for example choosing a storage box or basket to fit it, or choosing their own safety clothing and helmet.

Young children aged around 3 who have their first motorcycle can help with keeping it clean. They will love throwing soapy water around, and it’s a great way for parents and children to bond whilst having great fun! Little kids can also help put the bike away after use, for example covering it with a waterproof cover at night, or putting it in the garage for the winter.

Older children can start to help out with bigger jobs. Get them involved with keeping the bike charged up or filled up with gas. Make sure they know how to tell when these jobs need to be done, by checking the appropriate gauges. Ensure your child doesn’t start to neglect the jobs they had when they were younger though!

Young teenagers can start to get involved with mechanical jobs, with the help of mom or dad. Get them to help perform basic checks such as oil levels and tire pressure. Older kids could also start to contribute to the financial aspect of keeping their motorcycle running. If they don’t have a job, they could save any money they get for Christmas or birthdays towards buying their motorcycle or using for other related expenses.

Getting your child involved with the maintenance of their motorcycle can be a great way to prolong its lifespan, as well as saving parents a great deal of time and money in the long run. We hope these tips have been useful, and that your child loves getting involved in keeping their cycle in tip-top condition!
