Hat Makeover

A couple of months ago I was at Target (yes, very typical of me) and I found this hat on clearance.  My first thought was, hmmmm that's an odd little bird.  However, that hat itself was cute and I figured I could give it a mini makeover.  Here it is before the makeover.

See what I mean?  It's a bit odd.  If any of you readers bought this same hat and like the bird, please don't be offended.  I can't rock the bird, but I'm sure you can.

I removed the bird and ribbon through some careful surgery.  Don't worry - the bird was NOT harmed in the process.  I replaced the ribbon with a black one and I tacked it on in a few places along the way.

Now it's pretty neutral, but I can spice it up if I want to.  Since I didn't sew the ribbon down everywhere, I can clip on anything that's on an alligator clip like this.  (I happen to have quite a few of these as hair accessories.)

Voila!  A hat for any occasion.....like taking my little guy to preschool when I haven't showered.

That's all for today.  Thanks for tuning in and thank you for your kind comments!  I sure appreciate it!

it IS an odd bird! but I like what you did with the hat! Very cute! I can't buy 'store' hats...I have to make them custom...my head plus my poof of a head of hair makes my head too big for 'one size fits all' :( bummer. But I guess that's good bc I don't look very good in hats LOL

That's super cute. I think it would have been way better if you could have used christmas lights instead of hair accessories. But that's just me.

I have a feeling there will be many mornings when you'll have to drop Rex off not showered. At least that's how it went for me.

what a great transformation! Love the new look! I gotta get me a cuter hat like yours since I just throw on a paint splattered baseball hat when I'm covering my non-showered head! Heading to Target! ;)

Ha Ha..if I had that hat my hubby would try to convince me to leave that weird bird on because he really likes parrots. And then when I changed it he would tease me for not valuing his opinion.
Very cute! I may have to try it.

It kind of looks like the bird was missing a piece on the bottom. Your hat is so cute!

LOVE the hat, but the real question is HOW did you make that super cute flower?

Cute! Love your transformation & love that it's not your typical baseball style hat (that I normally slap on for a bad hair day!).

That's so funny, i just did a similar hat refashion, replacing the ribbon. I posted about it on my blog, but it's in portuguese :S I love to read your blog and it inspires me everyday. Thank you for all the ideas :)

I know this is random but did you ever watch Arrested Development? There's a funny on-going bird noise thing throughout the series that your first picture reminded me of. And the ca-caw. Funny!

Anyways, very cute makeover! Thanks for your blog!!

Hi Cheri,

I tried to email you, but I got an error message.

I have a question for you. School is right around the corner. I have a FIRST GRADER this year (man, does time fly!) Do you have any "cute" ideas for me to make/embellish/refashion a fun paint smock for her? I have old t-shirts and/or old dress shirts but I do not own a sewing machine (yet). So, any suggestions you have would have to be sewn by hand. Thanks Cheri.

You are so adolable! I agree... I don't care for the bird. Your makeover made the hat look so much cuter.

You look great with hats! I don't wear hats because it doesn't feel like "me". Maybe it is the idea of wearing something on my head other than hair clips or headbands.
