What I Love Wednesday - the Honest Company

After totally changing the way we eat in our home and going totally "clean," it made me start to look at other things in our home.  Ideally, I'd like to use the most natural products I can.  I want to clean up what I use for makeup, cleaning products, and more.  So, when I got the chance to review laundry products from the Honest Company I jumped at the chance.

First let me tell you about the company.  The Honest company was started by a mom and dad who were getting a little worried about questionable ingredients in the products they used at home.  They wanted to create an honest company, that would offer effective, affordable, safe, and eco-friendly products.

The Honest company now sells a lot of different products - diapers and wipes, cleaning products, laundry products, and even personal care products.  I love the idea of having products that you don't have to hide from your kids.

The dryer clothes were the product I was most anxious to try.  I don't like regular dryer sheets.  Then I switched to one that was a spray, but it didn't remove any static from my laundry.  These dryer clothes were great.  They pull out and look like a wet wipe.  They were fully effective.  I had no static in the laundry.  There's very little scent to them - which I like.

The laundry detergent was also great.  It cleaned all my loads of laundry well and my clothes came out smelling fresh, but not overly scented.

I wanted to really put the stain remover to the test.  When switching to natural products I think there's always a worry that they won't be as effective.  I had a lot of laundry from one of my son's bloody noses.  (Maybe that's gross to talk about, but that's the toughest stain I ever have.)  I tried out the stain remover on a sheet where the blood had dried for many days.

I had to search the sheet to find the stain after washing it.  If you look really hard you can just barely see it, but I also didn't let the stain remover soak very long.  I threw it right into the washer.  It did a lot better than what I have used in the past.

  1. Hey as a nursing student one of my instructors gave me advice on removing blood from clothing. Dab some hydrogen peroxide on it, and it destroys the hemoglobin which give blood its color, removing the stain. I haven't had a chance to try it, maybe you can, and let me know if it works?

    1. Hydrogen peroxide is the BEST thing to remove blood stains! It is also a completely safe alternative to bleach cleaners for disinfecting. Just don't store it in see through containers the light "deactivates" it (for lack of a better word).

  2. I LOVE Honest Diapers. I have had three children with very sensitive skin and prone to diaper rash. I tried to convince myself that I would do cloth diapering with the last one, but instead a friend bought me a month from honest and I have returned every month since. So convenient to have it delivered to your home! They also give you enough time to adjust your order as needed. Not one incident of diaper rash with the new baby! I am looking forward to using more of the skincare products this summer.

  3. The Hyrdrogen Peroxide works like a charm. Also, if there isn't a lot of blood, your own spit works wonder. Sounds gross but it works amazing.

  5. Those are very cute diapers! I love the idea of the honest company. Thanks for sharing! I try to use natural stuff when I clean mostly because some of the chemicals make me sick!

  7. I'll definitely be trying these! (Love when you can sample something before fully committing!) The best natural cleaners that I've tried are from Melaleuca. I was impressed with everything I tried from them!

  9. I have to disagree with you for the first time: cloth diapers are the cutest diapers ever. Zero chemicals, zero waste. And so easy too - we use bumGenius pockets and they go on and off just like a disposable.

  10. Do you happen to know the sizes of the free sample? I'm assuming its a smaller size, but I don't really want to pay the shipping fee if I'm going to get a miniscule amount or something like that. I couldn't find it on the website. If its the full size that would be amazing. Thanks!

    1. I read through what I could find on the web site and it says they are trial size, so I'm guessing that's pretty small.

  12. Just a note. You might want to mention that if you sign up for the free trial you are then automatically put on a recurring order for a minimum of $40 a month unless you choose to go back and opt out. I personally don't like being manipulated into those sorts of deals through a supposedly 'free' trial (I don't want to pay the shipping on that either to be perfectly frank - they are marketing so they should budget for that). I am sure they are good products but I won't try them for this reason alone. I don't mean to sound snarky by the way - just giving honest feedback!

  13. I've gotten the samples from Honest Co. When ordering the diaper samples you get 5 or 6 diapers and a pack of 10 wipes. The others are small travel size samples. I can't remember exactly which products they send you samples of but they are a good size. Not little packets or anything. They are like 2-3 oz bottles.

  15. FYI you also have to pay shipping for the "free" sample. And the other poster was correct that you are signed up for a monthy service that you have to cancel within 7 days.

  16. Cheri, what do you use for face wash? I'm looking for something new, and appreciate the cleaner/healthier products but haven't found the perfect thing yet.

  17. P.S. You can also get BOTH "free samples" for just one $5.95 shipping fee, so if you're interested in both, that's actually still a good deal.

  18. Cheri: I check in on your blog every now and then but have never commented before (sorry ;)) I just read this post and would love to introduce you to the products I use through Melaleuca.
