This was my entry for So You Think You're Crafty last week. It won the week's theme of "Edible."
Some of you know that Rex has quite an obsession with mustaches. Yes, it's a bit odd, but I get a kick out of it. Last month when he turned three and wanted a "mustache party."

I thought it would be fun to make it like a tea party.
I didn't want to invest in a full tea party set, so I bought disposable plates and cups and drew on them with a Sharpie. I did funny faces on the plates, so there would be a perfect landing spot for the mustache pettifors.
I drew a shirt on the napkin where the tie sandwich would sit.
I drew different mustaches on the cups, so everyone could keep their's straight. Can you tell they'd already eaten their cake by the time I took this picture?
The tricky part was the pettifors, but I came up with a pretty easy way to make them. I baked a chocolate cake, split it half like you would to make a layer cake.
I purchased a mustache cookie cutter. I cut out a 'stache, frosted the top with the cream filling, cut out another 'stache and placed it on top.
Then I frosted the whole thing with the chocolate frosting. I didn't use fondant because I'm not crazy about the taste. Plus, it doesn't have to be perfect to look like a hairy mustache :)
They were a hit with each boy.
If you want the actual recipe for the pettifors here it is. They were ridiculously good.
Chocolate Cake:
1 package of Devil's Food cake mix
1 small package of instant chocolate pudding
3/4 cup oil
4 eggs
1 cup sour cream
Bake at 325 degrees for 35-40 minutes.
Cream Filling:
2 cups of powdered sugar
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup crisco
3 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
Chocolate Frosting:
1 stick of butter (softened)
1tsp. vanilla2-3 cups powdered sugar (depending on the thickness you desire)
1/4 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp. milk
2-3 T. of cocoa powdered
No pink, no frills, no drama....just plain manly fun. Now you can head over to SYTYC to vote for this week's theme which is "Cultural."

ReplyDeleteOk - so could I make a suggestion... as i was reading this post I thought - I could do that with ding dongs! If they are cut down the middle, but not all the way and then just butterfly them open - put some extra frosting on the outside and voila! you have mustache cakes without too much work. Just a suggestion in case anyone needs a mustache cake on the go :)
ReplyDeleteTotally knew this was your craft that week!
