We been living in our current home for almost two years. One thing I loved about this home when we looked through it was the hardwood flooring. Once we moved in we quickly realized just how slippery it was. I made sure to buy socks that had some sort of gripper on the bottom for Rex. However, he recently arrived at the shoe size where they don't sell gripper socks in his size anymore. He's had a lot of wipeouts. While I could say, "He'll learn," I thought of a better solution so he'd be able to run like the wind.
Homemade Gripper Socks!
But, before we get started I want to show you just how slippery our floors really are. ( Rex is 18 months old in this video, so this was a while ago.)
This project was fast, easy, and fun. I got out my Tulip Slick Paints and started drawing all over the back of Rex's socks.
I applied the paint fairly thick to make the gripping action strong.
I let him pick what designs he wanted so that he would be excited to wear them.
This pair is my favorite.
He likes them, too.
No more wipeouts for us.
Now who wants to come over and race around the house?
ADDENDUM: Due to the stretching of the socks the pictures have started to crack a bit. That doesn't really bother us here, but if it's going to bug you then I recommend doing a simpler design or a lot of smaller lines. For example, instead of a giant thunderbolt I could do a bunch of little ones. Dots work great also.

WOOT! More present ideas for me to make for all my friends who have boys! You are a gold mind girl!
ReplyDeletevery nice!
ReplyDeletethose are some slippery floors!
brilliant!! I will need to pass this on to my childcare parents. our wood/laminate in the kitchen/dining areas is pretty slippery sometimes. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeletePS and yes, I meant gold "mind"....like Midas with your crafts!
ReplyDeleteWOnder if you could do that to rugs that slip? You are a clever rabbit..Better get a patent on this idea....There's money in that idea...
ReplyDeleteLove it! Love the video, love the socks, love your neat ideas. I think if we had floors like this, my DH would do the same thing with our children. :)
ReplyDeleteThose socks are so cute and I'd never thought they'd be so easy to make. My apartment has that kind of floor too and Ia use gripper socks too (I'm not a big slippers-and-stuff fan). But the biggest victims of your "slippery-sloap" are our cats, they keep bumping in the walls, while running around the house, but i guess they wouldn't be quite fond of wearing socks :P
ReplyDeleteThose are really cute. Good Idea!
ReplyDeletewhat a terrific idea! Last year I looked and LOOKED for gripper socks for my little guy and couldn't find anything that would work. Bought him slippers with grips, but he wouldn't wear them! Never, ever, occured to me to MAKE some! Have I told you I thought you were brilliant? Love this idea! Maybe I can incorporate the dirt dinge into my sock design somehow? Haha!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. I have done this before, but just lines and dots. It didn't occur to me to make adorable little designs. Your socks are super cool. :)
ReplyDeleteAdorable. I love them! You have such fun ideas, Cheri!
ReplyDeleteHello, I've never commented...I just found your blog a few days ago and love it! I am a huge fan of the socks too - not only are they adorable and practical - they'll be easier to mate when you fold the laundry! I might need to do this to my husband's socks...
ReplyDeleteThat is such a great idea. We have laminate floors and I've just been telling my kids to take off their socks, but now they won't have to! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteawesome idea- thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteWe too have wood floors so this is awesome!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea and so custom!
I love his messy hair soooo cute!
Oh my gosh that video is hilarious!!! It totally made me laugh!
ReplyDeleteGood call on the socks! I wouldn't have thought of that but it's a great idea! One person commented about matching them out of the dryer...I think that alone is a great reason to do it aside from the slippiness!!
GREAT idea!!! I LOVE them! I will have to make some for my boys too.
ReplyDeleteOk, can I just tell you I love you? All of my friends have all boys. I mean ALL OF THEM. When we have a party it's usually 12 boys and my 2 girls. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for your wonderful boy present ideas! You are such a genius!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! Those socks are adorable!
ReplyDeleteYou are so smart! I was really curious how one would make their own grippy socks. And I can't believe that video, those are some very slippery (but beautiful) floors!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this! I have been meaning to do this and you just reminded me. I bought both girls the same socks, just different sizes. Arg, it makes sorting them tricky! So I was going to paint each a different color on the bottom. Now I know which kind of paints to buy and that I don't have to do simple dots and lines :)
ReplyDeleteThat video had my in stitches... goodness it's a slippery floor. Reminds me of Tom Cruise in Risky Business. I'd be tempted to throw on the white dress shirt and socks and give it a try!
ReplyDeleteIs there anything special about the Slick paint, or is it just the puffy fabric paint? I need to do this NOW for my 2-yr-old with giant feet! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fab idea! I was thinking of making slippers for my kids but knew fleece slippers would be way to slippery! Now I know what to do!!
ReplyDeleteI love the Batman ones! What a cute idea...I am sure my boys will be excited to pick their designs too. I am going to try it this week :)
ReplyDeleteOoohh, this is perfect! I made some fleece dino slippers last week for my son, and some people asked me about slippery floors (we dont' really have that issue, so I didn't know what to say) - but this is great!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! And I just bought my 3 year old a new pack of socks last night! I must have subconciously known you would have this tutorial today! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove those! Especially the Transformers ones. Very good! You're so talented. If you would like to see what I tried from your blogs go to

I love this idea! My favorite are the "rex" socks.
ReplyDeleteoh geez! great idea! with the cooler weather, we have broken out the socks in our house and we have the same issue with our hardwoods. my 18 month old just took a nose dive earlier and you have now solved that problem for me! thanks!!
ReplyDeleteYou video made me laugh so hard! Guys are so funny!! Great idea to fix those slippery floors ;)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I can't believe you posted about this. I was just telling somebody today that my boys no longer fit into socks with grippers and that I was going to try puffy paint on the bottom. Of course I was just going to do some boring dots but now you've inspired me to be more creative!
ReplyDeleteoh mom. you took all the fun out of it. did you hear that at all? mine would. i love those socks though.
ReplyDeleteThanks for following up on my puffy paint questions, Cheri! I'll be sure to report back how it works!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the idea! I just made some for my slippery little man this afternoon.

Cheri, I'm gonna try this on a rug with no grippers. Cross your fingers for me.
ReplyDeleteUm...is it sad that my husband would want the Tranformer's socks? Ha!

Love this idea! Came across it just in time for "sock weather" around the house. I was amazed at how my not-so-new walker slipped his first time in socks on the laminate flooring we have!
ReplyDeleteHere's the link to the post I did (crediting you of course):

My kids also love to play on our slippery floors! It's kinda dangerous, but as long as we supervise them, they will surely be safe. Anyway, I'm just in love with your ideas! I might try those for my kiddos also.. =]

I just tried these with some of my daughter's "baby legs." I posted the experiment (and credit to you) on my blog

omg only guys would think to slid the kids on the floor! lmao my kids would love that...the socks and the Olympic floor sliding!!
ReplyDeleteSuper!!!! What a fantastic idea!!! This totally solves my problem with my boy sliding around in his footie jammies (he wears them inside out otherwise he gets naked all the time - he's 2). Thanks for sharing and what a great site - you're so crafty :)
ReplyDeleteCheri, I just clicked on a pinterest of this and was so excited to see it was yours!! I love your blog xox Brooke from www.babybearhugs.com

This is genius! I am soooo doing this! Our floors are extremely slippery as well, making it hard for my 11 month to learn how to walk. BTW, my 2-year-old watched your video about 10x in a row :o) -Sarah @ Repeat Crafter Me
ReplyDeletethis is a great idea i wanted to get personalized socks for my son to wear at his Birthday party because no one will see his nice shoes since he has to take them off to play and all the socks i found online sucked and the nice ones too expensive this is so awesome thanks
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea for the elderly too. I've made some for my grandparents while they were in the hospital.

ReplyDeleteI am so lovin this. My Cameron cannot get enough of Transformers' stuff. The more the better. I will definitely have to try this.
ReplyDeleteGreat work!
Thanks.
Thanks so much for posting this! My daughter wears ankle braces and they are slippery on the bottom, so even around the house she has to wear something over them. These work great!
ReplyDeleteI just want to say...You are brilliant! Thanks for sharing your creativity with us!!
ReplyDeletegreat idea! Planning on making cute socks for my 82 year old mother who needs traction to keep from falling in the nursing home. I wanted something other than institutional looking hospital socks.

ReplyDeleteDitto! These will be great for my 88 year old Mom :)
DeleteCan these be put in the dryer? I love slipper socks and am going to TRY to make some myself from misc materials.
ReplyDeleteLove this! My niece is also growing out of the 'gripper socks' sizes - I will definitely be making these for her for Christmas. Instead of lightning bolts and Batman logos, I think I will need to do flowers and hearts! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove this! My boys are grown... but I have an 88 year old Mother that really could use some of these too!!! These will be great for her stocking.
