Soapbox Saturday - the Library

Today I want to declare my strong love for our library.  Yes, I LOVE the library.  Let me tell you exactly why.

1) There are days when we need to get out of the house and I don't want or need to go shopping.  I don't want to spend money and I need to do something my boys will enjoy.  The perfect solution?  The library.

2) I fell in love with Project Runway last season.  It was the first season I had watched and I instantly wanted more.  I didn't want to join Net Flicks just to watch them.  No problem.  I can reserve them from the library online and they e-mail me when it's ready to be picked up!  It's like having a friend that owns every movie.  Yeah baby!

3) I want to introduce lots of different books to my boys, but I don't want to spend all our money on a billion books and it's hard to know which ones are going to be good.  When I check them out at the library it's not a big deal if we get one that isn't great.  We've got twelve other ones to read and I didn't have to spend any money.

4) I have seriously considered dumping our cable because we can check out DVDs for the boys at the library.  They even had old school Transformers and lots of weird old shows Rex loves.

Lately we've found some amazing pop-up books.  Wow, they have come a long way since I was a kid!  Check these out.

This one even has the Lasso of Truth.  Look out.

So, thank you library for loaning us your cool books and shows.  Thank you for not minding that my boys don't really understand the meaning of the word "whisper."  Thank you for giving us someplace to hang out when the weather is cold and we need a little excitement.  Thank you for having that cool conveyer to return the books on.  (I even think that's pretty fun.)  You rock.

What's your favorite thing about the library?

  1. Oou! Us too us too! That's EXACTLY how I feel about the library (or Lii'bee if you're my kid) being able to order up a book on their hold service is awesome too. Like Amazon, but for free!

  2. We love it too. I love how excited my son get just talking about going to the library! When we get there he goes through the aisles and grabs every book with a cool picture/favorite character on the cover. Sometimes he even waits for me to tell him the title. lol I love having so many DIFFERENT books to read for 2 weeks (we usually walk away w/ 20+ books). He loves for me to read to him, and I am thrilled to not have to read the same book 100 times.

  3. We love our library too!! I have a nine month old and a ten year old and the library has activities for both children! Not only can we check out books, music, and movies, but my son can get free tutoring an can check out video games or play on the computers. They also have pre-school bag kits with a book, a tape to go with the book and different themed activities in the bag to go with the books. They have a house to play in, blocks, etc and have wonderful activities and programs throughout the month for all ages. They even have an infant lapsit/ play group! And a book club for moms! It is a life saver on cold days for us too and during school breaks! They even have vouchers for the area museums if we go to certain programs or read so many books during beaks!

  4. I love our local library as well!! They text me when I have stuff available and also the day before my stuff is due. My daughter loves their baby and toddler mommy and me classes. Their rapid reads and view program is great because all the new books and movies are available for a rapid 3 day rental instead of having to wait on a waiting list forever! The library is the best way to go :)

  5. My favorite thing about our library is its summer reading program. My kids love signing up for it every year and reading tons of books to win prizes. Each week during the reading program they have different things going on at the library. One of which is a street fair. So fun!

  6. I love our library's summertime story time calendar of events. School is out, my kids are bored. Every Wednesday in the summer they do something special..like a magician or puppet show and even a guy who comes and brings reptiles like snakes to show everyone. It makes the summer more bearable.

  7. Our library has 4 touch screen computers in the kiddo area. My son LOVES to play on them. They also have a lot of the kids books on this cool train thing that the kids can reach to pick their own books. We heart our library!

  9. We love our library too. When we moved to a new area I signed up for the playgroup that met at the library and instantly made lots of new mommy friends. Our library also sponsors a letter boxing event in the summer. They put letter boxes with stamps in all of the local parks and a few museums and allow free admission to the kids & their families who are participating.

  10. LOVE the library! Favorite thing about the library: It's FREE and it makes me AND my kids happy! I love that my kids feel like it's a special "treat" for them to be able to choose from all the books at the library. OH...and STORY TIME!! And one more thing...I love that it is generally a "quiet" place. I LOVE to go there every now and then and just read! You know, for "me" time away from the house but I don't want to really do anything? Love the library's peace!

  11. We are in love with our library too!! I used to buy all my novels, read them and stick them on a shelf never to be touched again. I got a lot smarter and I'm saving some money visiting the library. Our library has a huge video library as well (handy cause we DID turn off our cable) and I love to put books on our reserve list. We go to our library at least once a week. As a matter off fact, we are heading over there today!! :)

  13. Just HAVE to share this story, because I'm hoping it will bring a smile to someone. I used to like the library, but now I cannot return because on the last visit to story time with my son (3), he not only pushed open the security alarm door during the reading of the story, but also pulled his pants and underpants down to his ankles while waiting in line to use one of the kid computers. (side note: both times I was only a few steps away, but just not quiiiiiite close enough to get to him in time) Now my son enjoys going to the library with his Nana. I can't bear to go back. :)

  16. We're new in town and went to our local library who not only supplies books and DVDs, but also discounted or FREE passes to LOTS of local attractions-- museums, parks, zoos, aquariums etc. We take advantage of one almost every weekend-- and if we end up somewhere lame-- at least we didn't spend much on admission (if any). Who Knew??

  19. we love the library also! my kids love going to story time and getting all kinds of different books. my 3 year old son is not in preschool this year so story time has been good to help him understand that he has to sit quietly and listen to someone of authority....and they love to do crafts. i like to go for myself, by myself, once in awhile just to get some peace and quiet for a little bit. the library is great!!

  20. I know just what you mean, now that my kids are grown I miss the library so much. I loved all the summer programs they offered. One time we went and learned to play the drum, so much fun, I'll never forget it!

  21. When I was little we had a Bookmobile. It came by my house which was cool. We got to know the librarian really well. They would pick out the new books they thought we would like and bring them out. I always got the Sweet Valley High books first.

now I like going with my son so we can read new books w/o buying them, esp now that we've moved and couldn't bring a lot of his toys.

  22. I love the library. That is when I get to go. My boys are still so small that its hard to take all 3 of them there. One can't be quiet for the life of him and the other two aren't walking yet, so its still hard to have all three going in with me. When I only had one, I would take him with me. The ladies at the Library loved to talk to him and make him smile. I would know what I wanted to rent before I went there and grab it so that if he started to act up, we could just check out and leave, but he hardly was a problem. He would just look at all the people and all the books and overall be good. I need to take him back sans his brothers, but I will soon!

  23. I just LOVE the library! My 2 BIG girls are now in full day school so my son & I have special days together at the library. We always go grab some Starbucks before heading off to the library and then snuggle up together drinking and read books! LOVE :)

  24. We have always loved the library wherever we have lived! We are in a new town now, and have found the best storytime librarian of all time - and it's a man! He does lots of fun stories and songs, and a silly puppet show at the end.

I have to ask, what is the name of that pop-up book? My son would really dig that one!!
