A year ago I did a Feature Friday on arm warmers. You can see it HERE. Well, I was rummaging through my craft room the other day and I saw four pairs of super cute knee socks I had purchased on clearance a while back. Autumn is when we bust out arm warmers for the boys around here, so I thought I'd show you this idea again - plus the new ones I just made.
The concept is turning knee socks into arm warmers, though most people do this to create baby leg warmers. I don't have girls or even babies right now, but we love them as cute layers under t-shirts. The boys can whip them off when it gets warmer in the afternoon.
Plus, they are fun to coordinate with shirts.
Here's a mini-tutorial, in case you want to make some. Cut as much of the sock off as possible.
Cut off the heel and toe.
Fold that part in half, creating a cuff.
Then pull it over the long sock part, stitch, and then roll it down. They are really simple to make.
Then find a shirt that matches and enjoy your warm arms.
Thanks for reading.

Вау!!! Супер прикольная идея!!!)))
These are awesome. Totally forgot about these...thanks for the reminder. I might have to make some!!
What an inventive idea! I love it!
So cute! LOVE THEM!
That is so cool! Our weather has been moody out here lately. Cold mornings and hot afternoons. These would be great for my little guy! Cool idea Cheri!
I love all the Paul Frank shirts! That's a great idea, maybe my youngest won't be sweltering in 70 degree weather (like his brother) so I can try these out!
You do know you're brilliant, right? I'm totally going to do this! Thanks!
Holy cow...those are AWESOME!!! I am SO doing this. Thanks for sharing, as always!
Love this idea! Especially since my sewing skills are at the preschool level and I still think I could pull it off.
I just want you to know that I think you are a genius. I follow your blog and appreciate all of the time you put into it. Your ideas are amazing and this one will save us a loooot of money...you rock :)
Is there any way to get around the fact that I don't have a serger? How do I make this work without one?
These are ace! Thanks for sharing!
So awesome! Thanks for sharing:)

I have to ask...when you stick the cuff on do you use a straight stitch or a zig-zag stitch? Thanks.
Heather
I was just staring at a pair of socks yesterday wondering what would be a good way to do this. Well I guess that answers that. Thank you!
Great idea! In fact, I pinned this on my Great Ideas board! Send the kids to school on a chilly morning with these, & no jacket to carry home in the afternoon! :)

I love layers. I love this look!
Krista- There is so serger involved here. I don't have one either. You just need a sewing machine.
Lovinsanta - Whenever sewing with knits, it's good to use a slight zigzag. It doesn't have to be a big one, but slightly zig-zagged.

Hi Cheri,
Are you using kid or adult socks? I'd love to make some for my little guy. :)
Briaboo - They are adult socks. I got mine in the woman's section.
Cheri
Thanks, Cheri! I'll have to see what I can find over here. :)
What a cute idea! I bought a couple pairs of knee socks last year to make leg warmers for my son, but they slid down his legs anyway. Arm warmers might work now that he's older though, especially since that way he won't have to stop wearing short sleeves so soon.
I love it! I have a 10 week old little boy and I'm definately going to make these for him for next fall!!
We like to use these when we play in the snow. I put them on over their gloves and shirt sleeves to help hold the gloves on. We use them to keep the socks and pants all tucked in together.
awsome!
Where did you find your socks? I saw this tutorial almost a year ago, and I've been looking for knee socks ever since but have never found any!
Kylie- I always find them at Target. They are in the women's department by nylons, etc. I think they have some in right now.
Cheri
That is a great great idea!
Genius! I've made some for my daughter as leg warmers but it never occurred to me to make some for arms for my boys. They hate wearing jackets and it's usually 70+ in the afternoon, even in the winter.
Brilliant!! Do you have any "action shots?" I would love to see what they look like on!!
The action shots are here:

Do your sons ever complain about the "socks" on my arms?
Just Better Together
are these sewn into the shirt? or can they choose which combinations they want for each day?
Ok, I just tried this but without much success. for some reason, when I sewed mine, they got all stretched out and really distorted! I used a zig zag stitch...so I can't figure out what went wrong. Any ideas?
Jayma-
I think you probably stretched the fabric a bit as you were sewing it. It's really hard not too with knits. I just try to force the fabric under my machine a bit to make sure I don't stretch it as I go along. You could also take in the cuff a bit before you sew it on. That way they'll be tighter at the top. I hope that helps!

What a great idea! My son has a bunch of short-sleeved t-shirts but not many long-sleeved shirts for fall and winter. This is a great way to extend his wardrobe!
REALLY like this idea! Could you cut the socks off at the ankle and sew THAT onto the tshirt? That way you would only sew once and use the ribbed top of sock as the wristband?? Please email at bobojay55@yahoo, not sure how I would know there is an answer here. Thanks
