Two Fun Announcements - Twitter and For the Love

We break from our normal Feature Friday to announce two fun things today!

1) This is the less exciting announcement, but I'm now on Twitter.  Yes, call me a social media junkie :)  I can't promise that I'll be tweeting hourly with outrageously funny lines, but I will keep you updated on my posts here....with an occasional extra bit of something.  You can find and follow me HERE.  And to be honest, I'd love it if someone went over there to start following me so I don't have to be the cheese that stands alone :)  Thanks.

2) As I've mentioned, I've been thinking a lot about how to help promote newer bloggers AND I've been trying to find a way to do more good here.  It think I've finally come to a solution.  Here are the details.

I'm going to try out a new series here during the summer.  We'll see how it goes.  It'll be called "For the Love" because it's about our love of crafting AND our love of charity.

Each Monday you will find a beautiful item here that will be auctioned off for charity.  There will also be a link to the tutorial for that item in the post.  At the end of the summer all the proceeds will go to a great charity.  (I'm still trying to decide which one, but let me know if you have one dear to your heart.)

The way I see it it's a win-win.  The featured blogger (and creator of the auctioned item) will receive a LOT of traffic to their site as everyone hops over for the tutorial.  That's why I'm setting it up this way and not hosting the tutorial here.  I will also do a little write up about that person's blog to help promote them on the auction post.  The auction will be fun and wouldn't you love to buy something knowing that ALL the money goes to a great charity?

Now, if you are interested in being a featured blogger here's what I would need from you.  I'm looking for items that people will really want to buy.  (Think about one of your more popular posts or tutorials.  Perhaps you could do a spin on it.)  You will also need to ship the item to the winner, so you probably don't want to make something that's giant and made of wood.  To apply, send me a picture of the finished item you would potentially auction off and provide a tutorial of.  You have all of May to apply and if you are accepted I will give you a post date.  I know it's a lot of work, but if by some reason it isn't accepted, you still have a great tutorial all ready for your own blog.  Your blog could have 2 followers or 5,000.  It doesn't matter.  I'm just looking for great projects.

So, what do you think?  Are you in?  Are you confused?  (Hopefully not.)  Do you have a charity you love?  Are you excited?  I'd love to hear your input.

Thanks for being here.

  8. The company I work for used to pair with Life Is Good to support Camp Sunshine. Its not local, but its such a fantastic place. So maybe a charity like that? Its a great opprotunity to teach kids that other kids with disabilities or sickness are really just like them too..

  10. Wow, I wish I were crafty so I could donate something. I'm not. at all. It's a little embarrassing. I do have a master's degree in Storytelling and I would be happy to donate my time as a storyteller, but that makes things a bit localized. Oh well.

  12. Great idea! I love that you've thought to help out new bloggers. What a great way to pay it forward :)

So many charities; that's going to be a tough call. Maybe you could have your guest choose a charity that's close to his/her heart, and give the proceeds of their item to that charity? Just a thought.

P.S. I linked to your freezer paper tute today. I hope you don't mind :)

  13. Cheri,
I love that you are so community minded and are always thinking of great ways to give back! A number of my close friends with children have been to Vancouver Children's Hospital recently. I know that it can be very scary to have a sick or ill child. Ronald McDonald House http://www.rmhbc.ca/ or http://rmhslc.org/ has been instrumental in supporting some of these families. Working closely with little ones {and having them myself} this is a program that really touches my heart. Thanks for the opportunity Cheri ~ I'll be applying :D

  17. Oh this is a great idea! I have tons of ideas for charities :)

My daughter was born with several severe heart defects last may. Did you know that 1 in 100 kids are born with a heart defect? Did you know that CHD's are the leading cause of infant death? Did you know that 2 times as many kids die from CHDs then all forms of pediatric cancer combined, yet CHDs get 1/5 the funding for research? [PLEASE here me when I say cancer needs more funding too! This just was a shocking fact for me and shows a major lack of funding]I did not know any of this until we learned my daughter would be born with a broken heart. We just celebrated her first birthday this week - a milestone that we did not know we would ever see.

Some awesome organizations that help fund research and/or support heart families... Whole Hearts Foundation, The Children's Heart Foundation, Icing Smiles, Sisters By Heart, Charley's Heart, Bravehearts Foundation... I could provide you with lots more. Or Ronald McDonald House - we lived there for almost 100 days this past year.

I share my daughters story at www.caringbridge.org/visit/gandyfamily. During heart month (FEB), I posted about several charities and groups.

No matter what you do, it will be great. These are just some ideas... since you asked :)

  19. My charity vote is for http://worldbirthaid.org/. 100% of donations for toward creating and distributing "clean birth kits" to underprivileged women so their risk of infection during and after birth is reduced.
