Soapbox Saturday - things I love

I love hearing about products and ideas from friends and family.  Today I'm sharing 5 random things I am loving right now.  It's a random list, but they are all worth sharing.

1) I purchased this oven liner from Kohl's a while back.  It's a super simple concept.  You slip it into the bottom of your oven.  That way when things leak or drip you don't have to spend hours cleaning out your oven.  My sister introduced me to it.  I thought I'd still have to spend a lot of time cleaning the liner, but you can actually just flick the spots off of it.  They don't really stick to it.  Awesome.  (You can also get it a lot cheaper than the listed price because Kohl's pretty much always has a sale going on.)

2) Very Jane.  I mentioned this site at the water cooler a while back because I really like it.  I enjoy the daily deal concept and this site has some seriously cute stuff they offer.  I'm on their email list, which normally I'm not a fan of.  However, because their stuff is so cute I actually like getting their emails.  Here are a few recent things I've seen there.  The prices are really good, too.  These crocheted hats are $8.99!  Really?  Can you even make it for that?

Check out these ruffled baby blankets which are so pretty for photos.

And here's a necklace I just got from Very Jane.

3) Leapfrog's "Letter Factory" DVD.  Rex's teacher recommended this DVD and said it really helps kids firm up their letter names and sounds.  I watched it with him, wondering how they'd get through all 26 letters and their sounds.  It was a great, creative video.  They had awesome and funny ways to remember each sound.  If you're child is 3-5, I highly recommend this.

4) A while back I mentioned that I had read "Leadership and Self-Deception" and loved it.  A few of you mentioned that there was a second book, "The Anatomy of Peace," that you liked even more.  I just finished it and it was amazing.  I don't read really often, but I sure love a book that can make you think about things in a totally different way.  The concepts in this book are great and they are explained so clearly.

I can't recommend this book enough.  PLUS, unlike other self-help books, it reads as a story or novel.  It makes it an easier read.

5) An indoor HDTV antenna.  We cut our cable well over a year ago.  We got really tired of paying so much when we didn't watch much TV anyhow.  We purchased an Apple TV box and got the streaming Netflix for $7 a month.  It's been fine, but I would like to watch the news and my husband wouldn't mind catching some sports here an there.

Well, my mom called the other day and told me about a indoor antenna she had just purchased at Costco.  Okay, I might sound like I'm from the ice age with this, but I thought you have to mount something big to your house or have giant bunny ears to really get basic channels.  This antenna was $29 and we now get around 20 channels.  It's small and simple.  Here's what it looks like in the store.  See the clear thin plastic sheet?  That's it.  You can lay it flat behind the TV or mount it to the wall.

How did I not know about this?  It's pretty sweet.

  2. Oh man, I'm with you on the Leadership and Self Deception/The Anatomy of Peace. While in college I took a class that the text book was Leadership and Self Deception. Quite possibly the most influential class I took! (my hubs is a therapist and loves those books too!) Thanks for the oven liner recommendation. Can't wait to try one out!

  4. So, I've been clicking "open in safari" and that gives you page views right?:)
Also, thank you fOr posting about the antennae! I too live in the dark ages I guess! Well, I knew about them kinda but not that they were so inexpensive! We have been watching news and network shows on the iPad, but I miss local news and FOOTBALL;)

  5. My husband is on his way to Best Buy (before I read this post) to get a new antennae. We have a different antennae, but it isn't powerful enough to get the local Fox channel (meaning we can't watch our favorite football team on Sunday!) I too thought he would have to get some big ugly thing for outside. I will have to call and tell him about Winegard :)!

My daughters loves the Leapfrog shows that are on Netflix (there are 4 of them, but the Letter Factory isn't one of them) I will have to check that one out.

    Thanks for sharing!!

  10. I love these kind of posts.....things that are actually cool & worth the money :) I also subscribe to very jane & love their stuff. One of my other fave deal-a-day sites is Belle Chic....their stuff is more handmade/artisan. Leapfrog is great! My kids have loved it....reminds me that I need to get another one for them to watch asap. The antenna intrigues me...I live in the middle of nowhere...wonder if it would work here?? Gotta look into it! Thanks!

  11. Thank you! I am definitely going to check out the dvd for my son, they are working on letters in preschool rigt now. My sister sent me an antenna, traditional rabbit ears for $15, and we live outside of Memphis and get about 30 channels. Shows I actually watch for free vs hundreds I don't for far from free? Good deal for me!

  12. We love the Letter Factory! Both of my girls learned their letters and sounds through it. I was amazed. I've never seen an oven liner like that, I'm going to have to try it out. My husband likes to cook frozen pizza directly on the rack and it makes a huge mess in our oven. Thanks!

  15. We also canceled cable over a year ago and got an hd antenna at the beginning of the summer. We also got some software for our computer called BeyondTV that allows us to use our antenna combined with our PC to create a DVR that we access through our Apple TV.

  16. My son loves Word World and good ol Sesame Street. I credit both of them for teaching him is letters early and how to start making words/reading. Both are free on PBS and free to download on iPad.

  24. The Letter Factory is fantastic! I'd recommend that as early as 18 months, which is when my Son started watching it due to a recommendation from his daycare teacher. He's well beyond other kids in his class because of that movie. Amazing!

I definitely have to check out the TV antenna!

  25. Do you recall which website was selling those adorable beanies? Since they are only daily deals, those are no longer listed (that I can find), and I'd just LOVE to get my boys MONSTER beanies :) Thanks for your input, and I'm definitely going to be signing up for the daily deals...there's some cute stuff up right now too! 26. Very interested in the antena....did you get any service with old school rabbit ears?

I think this is the coolest thing and wanted to race to my Costco....my husband is very skeptical ( we leave in a valley between very large mountains)

    1. We never had rabbit ears, but we're basically in a canyon and it works for us. You'd probably be surprised.

  27. My son LOVED the letter Leap Frog movies! With no assistance from me, but with a lot of watching those movies, he taught himself to read before Kindergarten! I wish I would have known about them with my first two!

  28. That antenna is pretty awesome. You have no idea how excited I was when I read this post about it. Got it today and as I was hooking it up I wondered if it would really work. Holy cow. It picked up 40 channels (some of them obscure, but we the basics that we wanted)! For years we've had no TV and though we've been fine without it, I've sometimes wished we had at least a few channels, and now we got them. Thanks for the recommendation!!
