Huge Chalk Sign under $10

You've all probably seen the pretty chalkboard art on Pinterest.  I love how it looks, but chalkboards kind of make me cringe.  When we moved into this home there was a chalkboard half wall in the playroom and the carpet had this thick yellow dust from all the chalk.  Chalk is messy stuff, but then something made me change my mind at the Home Depot the other day.

I went in to buy a sheet of MDF in this section to use as a canvas.....

.....but then I found this.  It's s pre-made chalkboard and it was less than $10.  It was also huge - 2'x4'.  Plus, there's no need to buy the chalk board paint, etc.

I figured that it would lean well on my giant shelf and I could change the sign when I wanted to, so I decided to go for it.  I could even take it outside to draw on it, so the mess wouldn't be inside and I could leave it high on the shelf where it would't get smeared all the time.  (It was way too cold to go outside yesterday though.)

For the first design, I was completely inspired by THIS quote and sign that I pinned a long time ago.

To make it I first drew the words like this.

Then I thickened them up till they looked like this.

And now it's on the shelf and I'm kind of excited to change it when I want to.

And here's a better view of where it sits in the room.

So now I've succumbed to the chalk board hype....but I really do love it.  I might even frame it at some point.

Thanks for stopping by.

I didn't know Home Depot carried that, how awesome! Think I might need one for my fireplace mantel :)

Like Sandy, I didn't know you could buy a pre-made chalkboard at Home Depot. What a great idea.

I used to be totally over the chalkboard hype...until we decided to paint our door from the kitchen to the garage with chalkboard paint. Now I LOVE it! We write quotes/scriptures we want the kids to work on memorizing, use it to leave cute notes to each other and there's even space for the younger girls to draw. I totally love it!

Thanks! I saw a tutorial for making one with plywood and chalkboard paint that I was going to pick up supplies for tomorrow. This is so much easier, and smoother, I'm sure. Chalk dust makes me cringe (and sneeze)m so I am planning to try some of those chalk markers! Thanks again.

I love the idea of being able to change up your art. I think I'm a little commitment-phobic when it comes to decorating, so this is perfect. Happy New Year!

ooh super cool! I've been hesitant with the chalk thing also. I didn't know they sold this. I may need to get one and make it smaller to fit on my shelf. The silhouette blog recently did a post where you can make a stencil for the chalk board with regular paper, and then fill in with chalk. She did some pretty intricate stuff! It looked awesome! Home depot/lowes also carry a white board (kind of by peg board and paneling stuff) that you can write on with dry erase markers. I needed a counter for my craft desk, and we used this board. I can doodle, make notes of measurements, etc. right on my counter! It's super sweet. Woah that was long! Who knew I'd be so excited about writing on stuff!

That's cool! I didn't know it was so easy to get a chunk of chalkboard. I'd love to see a frame on it as well.
I love what you have written on it right now. =)

That's cheap and easy! I love it! I've been hesitant to buy chalkboard paint and worried about the mess chalk dust makes, too. This is great.

We use Chalk ink markers from the art store but you can order them on Amazon too. You can buy a package of them or single colors. they are dust free and wipe clean with water. this is what stores like Trader Joe's use for their beautiful chalk signs.

Don't mean to be a downer, but how is this not straddling VERY close to infringing on the original artist's copyright? Same quote, same design/style of writing, same colors (though reversed), same intentional/not intentional running of the words off the edge, etc...If I were Kal Barteski, I would be sending you a strongly worded letter, at the very least.

Tonya - Frankly speaking, I have not violated any copyrights here. I have not reproduced this to sell. I created something similar for my own home because I liked it. If I copied it and tried to sell it, there would be an issue. I also didn't even hide the inspiration. I clearly linked it to the site, sending a whole lot of traffic that way. I didn't even post their photo on my blog. There is no issue at all, but thank you for your concern.
